{"id":116149,"date":"2018-11-16T17:32:52","date_gmt":"2018-11-16T17:32:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.searchenginewatch.com\/?p=116149"},"modified":"2020-02-28T02:45:22","modified_gmt":"2020-02-28T02:45:22","slug":"pinterest-visual-search-takeaways","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/2018\/11\/16\/pinterest-visual-search-takeaways\/","title":{"rendered":"Pinterest on visual search: key takeaways"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>We invited <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/mikeakkerman\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Michael Akkerman<\/a>, Global Head of Partners Program at Pinterest, to our NY office yesterday evening to speak on <a href=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/2018\/12\/04\/techseo-boost-machine-learning-for-seos\/\">visual search<\/a>. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>He talked about discovery over <a href=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/2019\/01\/04\/google-ads-conversion-rates-industry-compare\/\">search<\/a>, audience engagement over audience size, less time more well-spent over more total time spent, and social communities over social networks.\u00a0It was an insightful, instructive, and *obviously* visual-heavy session.<\/p>\n<p>Here were some of the key takeaways \/ highlights.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Pinterest is a visual discovery engine &#8212; discovery over search<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When people come to our platform, they\u2019re trying to discover new pieces of information. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our Pinners are not looking to connect with friends or post at parties. They\u2019re doing home renovations. They\u2019re in the market for something. They want to go and actually discover something. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Google is great for when I know what I want, but it\u2019s really crappy when I don\u2019t know how to articulate it. We wanted it to be able to take images instead of words. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Pinterest = possibilities<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What do I want to eat? What do I want to wear? How should I decorate my house? What\u2019s my style? We help people understand their taste.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Total numbers of pins:<\/strong> 23 billion food and drink. 18 billion home and garden. 8 billion beauty. 23 billion style. 4 billion travel. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are you in one of these categories? Your customers are on Pinterest.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Even if you think your brand\u2019s content isn\u2019t on Pinterest, your customers are probably already bringing it there. Seems like those are people you might want to go and chat with.&#8221;<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>What keeps people from buying? Discover products inside an image.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Personalization not as a feature, but rather the underpinning of the platform<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Pinterest, we understand that every single person has different interests. We don\u2019t want personalization as just a feature. We want it as the underpinnings of the entire platform. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The way we\u2019re doing it is we\u2019re bringing what\u2019s called the taste graph. The hipster guy from Williamsburg? His garden board doesn\u2019t look like everyone else\u2019s. My travel board? I want to go to Morocco. Not everyone does. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you interact on Pinterest, it feels like it knows you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What storytelling was on search versus what storytelling is on Pinterest. Driving people closer to an engaging experience.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Audience engagement over audience size<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Content at scale:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">250 million monthly active <a href=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/2018\/12\/21\/guide-google-analytics-confusing-terms\/\">users<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">170 billion pins &#8212; 5x the library of congress every single day<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3 billion boards<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We have the largest human focus group in the world, curating <a href=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/2019\/09\/04\/improve-seo-using-data-science\/\">content<\/a> into boards.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;We\u2019re 250 million people, not 2 billion. It\u2019s really looking at the <a href=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/2018\/12\/11\/related-keywords-tools-discover-optimize\/\">intent<\/a>. You\u2019ll find platforms with much larger audiences, but they\u2019re not there to engage. We\u2019re about time well-spent. We want you off the platform as soon as possible &#8212; we want you to solve your problem as quickly as possible.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;When people use Pinterest, they feel positive. It\u2019s about what you can build and achieve. Go make that recipe. Go build that birdhouse. Go nuts. Get off our platform as quickly as possible.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3>Purposeful communities over social networks<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019re not a social network &#8212; but communities are naturally springing up all the time around given topics, images, ideas, and brands.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most people call Pinterest \u201cmy time.\u201d Not about my social network.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Ads within the context of purpose-based community versus in a social network<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>1. Annoyance:<\/strong> \u201cPeople use social media to share things about their lives with each other. And let\u2019s face it, ads are annoying in that context.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Value:<\/strong> &#8220;With Google, you know the intent but not the person. With Facebook, you know everything about the person but less about the intent. I was drawn to Pinterest because it combines both.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ads often don\u2019t add value, and they feel disruptive, disjointed. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why not make them <em>additive<\/em>? If you\u2019re searching for a certain type of shoes, we\u2019ll show you ads for those shoes. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;If the content is valuable, I don\u2019t mind that it comes from a brand. It solves my problem.&#8221;<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><strong>How people shop: convenience and need over loyalty, bundles over individual items<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Example of REI: They saw that normal human beings shop in bundles. If they&#8217;re going camping, they don\u2019t need ten jackets and ten tents. They need a bundle of assorted things. That\u2019s great for a marketer. You\u2019re trying to engage customers, build brand, drive sales. But that looks different in every channel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kenshoo found that Facebook was undervalued by as much as 30%.
