We saw the appearance of the zero-result SERP, featuring knowledge cards for answers such as conversions and times. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We welcomed the <a href=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/2018\/04\/27\/googles-mobile-first-index-six-actions-to-identify-risks-and-maximize-ranking-opportunities\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">mobile-first index<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/2018\/08\/21\/the-page-speed-update-what-seos-need-to-know\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">mobile speed update<\/a>. With the focus on mobile, we saw <a href=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/2018\/10\/05\/how-to-drive-clicks-effective-meta-descriptions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">meta description<\/a> lengths shorten from 300+ to 150 or so.<\/p>\n<p>We saw minor changes to <a href=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/2018\/01\/04\/which-is-the-best-search-engine-for-finding-images\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">image search<\/a> and a renewed emphasis on &#8220;compelling and shareable <a href=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/2019\/09\/04\/improve-seo-using-data-science\/\">content<\/a>.&#8221; After testing video carousels on desktop SERPs for a while, <a href=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/2019\/02\/18\/google-ads-2019-what-to-look-out-for\/\">Google<\/a> decided to roll the feature out by replacing video thumbnails with video carousels across the board. Understandably, we&#8217;ve since seen more focus on <a href=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/2018\/06\/27\/video-and-search-youtube-google-the-alternatives-and-the-future\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">producing video<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Some algorithm updates occurred overnight, some happened incrementally. Some caused only ripples, and some turned the SERPs updside down.<\/p>\n<p>As we say hello to 2019, we want to take a moment to reflect on this past year.
