{"id":123218,"date":"2019-04-02T16:25:25","date_gmt":"2019-04-02T16:25:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.searchenginewatch.com\/?p=123218"},"modified":"2020-02-24T06:37:02","modified_gmt":"2020-02-24T06:37:02","slug":"using-google-dataset-search-seo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/2019\/04\/02\/using-google-dataset-search-seo\/","title":{"rendered":"Google Dataset Search: How you can use it for SEO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Back in September 2018, Google launched its <a href=\"https:\/\/toolbox.google.com\/datasetsearch\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dataset Search<\/a> tool, an engine which focuses on delivering results of hard data sources (research, reports, graphs, tables,\u00a0and others) in a more efficient manner than the one which is currently offered by <a href=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/2019\/07\/12\/how-to-get-featured-snippets-no-link-building\/\">Google<\/a> Search.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The service promises to enable easy access to the internet\u2019s treasure trove of data. As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blog.google\/products\/search\/making-it-easier-discover-datasets\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Google\u2019s Natasha Noy says,<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Scientists, data journalists, data geeks, or anyone else can find the data required for their work and their stories, or simply to satisfy their intellectual curiosity.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>For <a href=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/2019\/03\/12\/social-media-how-does-it-affect-seo\/\">SEOs<\/a>, it certainly has potential as a new research tool for creating our own informative, trustworthy, and useful <a href=\"https:\/\/sewprod.wpenginepowered.com\/2019\/07\/12\/how-to-get-featured-snippets-no-link-building\/\">content<\/a>. But what of its prospects as a place to be visible, or as a ranking signal itself?<\/p>\n<h2>Google Dataset Search: As a\u00a0research tool<\/h2>\n<p>As a writer who has been using <a href=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/2019\/02\/18\/google-ads-2019-what-to-look-out-for\/\">Google<\/a> to search for data since about a decade, I\u2019d agree that finding hard statistics on search engines is not always massively straightforward.<\/p>\n<p>Often, data which isn\u2019t the most recent ranks better than newer research. This makes sense in an <a href=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/optimize-instagram-account-search-engines\">SEO<\/a> sense, that which was published months or years prior has had a\u00a0long time to earn authority and traffic. But usually I need the freshest stats, and even search results pointing to data on a page that has been published recently doesn\u2019t necessarily mean that the data contained in that page is from that date.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, big publications (think news sites like the BBC) frequently rank better than the domain where the data was originally published. Again, this is unsurprising in the context of search engines. The BBC et al. have far more traffic, authority, inbound links, and changing content than most research websites, even .gov sites. But that doesn\u2019t mean to say that the user looking for hard data wants to see BBC\u2019s representation of that data.<\/p>\n<p>Another key issue we find when researching hard data on <a href=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/2018\/05\/21\/no-need-for-google-12-alternative-search-engines-in-2018\/\">Google<\/a> concerns access to content. All too regularly, after a bit of browsing in the SERPs I find myself clicking through only to find that the report with the data I need is behind a paywall. How annoying.<\/p>\n<p>On the surface, <a href=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/2019\/04\/25\/whats-it-like-using-duckduckgo-in-2019\/\">Google<\/a> Dataset Search sets out to solve these issues.<\/p>\n<p><!-- [if !vml]--><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-123217 size-full\" style=\"width: 508px; position: relative; margin: 5px auto; display: block; float: none; vertical-align: top;\" src=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/asg_ZLukk52KkJHX0Ox32Fart_tsDowG0kaEh8thWV2F1553074886736-dataset1.png\" alt=\"Example of Google Dataset Search result\" width=\"1000\" height=\"671\" srcset=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/asg_ZLukk52KkJHX0Ox32Fart_tsDowG0kaEh8thWV2F1553074886736-dataset1.png 1000w, https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/asg_ZLukk52KkJHX0Ox32Fart_tsDowG0kaEh8thWV2F1553074886736-dataset1-300x201.png 300w, https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/asg_ZLukk52KkJHX0Ox32Fart_tsDowG0kaEh8thWV2F1553074886736-dataset1-768x515.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A quick search for &#8220;daily weather&#8221; (<a href=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/2019\/05\/20\/seven-reasons-why-your-rankings-dropped-and-how-to-fix-them\/\">Google<\/a> seems keen to use this kind of .gov data to exemplify the usefulness of the tool) shows how the service differs from a typical search at <a href=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/2019\/06\/17\/local-seo-guide\/\">Google<\/a>.com.<\/p>\n<p>Results rank down the left-hand side of the page with the rest of the <a href=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/2019\/01\/28\/serp-of-tomorrow-117720\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SERP<\/a> real estate given over to more information about whichever result you have highlighted (position one is default). This description portion of the page includes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Key URL links to <a href=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/2019\/09\/11\/landing-page-copy-tips\/\">landing pages<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Key dates such as the time period the data covers, when the dataset was last updated and\/or when it was first published<\/li>\n<li>Who provides the data<\/li>\n<li>The license for the data<\/li>\n<li>Its relevant geolocation<\/li>\n<li>A description of what the data is<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>By comparison, a search for the same keyphrase on <a href=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/2019\/06\/10\/online-reviews-powerful-seo-weapons\/\">Google<\/a> in incognito mode prioritizes results for weather forecasts from Accuweather, the BBC,\u00a0and the Met Office. So to have a search engine which focuses on pure, recorded data, is immediately useful.<\/p>\n<p>Most results (though not all) make it clear to the user as to when the data is from and what the original source is. And by virtue of the source being included in the Dataset Search SERPs, we can be quite sure that a <a href=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/2018\/10\/05\/how-to-drive-clicks-effective-meta-descriptions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">click through<\/a> to the site will provide us access to the data we need.<\/p>\n<h2>Google Dataset Search: As a place to increase your visibility<\/h2>\n<p>As detailed on Google\u2019s launch post for the service, Dataset Search is dependent on webmasters marking up their datasets with the <a href=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/2019\/01\/11\/voice-search-optimization-guide-2019\/\">Schema.org<\/a> vocabulary.<\/p>\n<p>Broadly speaking, <a href=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/2019\/05\/30\/implement-googles-how-to-schema\/\">Schema<\/a>.org is a standardized way for developers to make information on their websites easy to crawl and understandable by search engines. <a href=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/2019\/01\/24\/free-technical-seo-tools\/\">SEOs<\/a> might be familiar with the vocabulary if they have marked up their <a href=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/2019\/04\/22\/top-advanced-youtube-seo-tips-to-boost-your-video-performance\/\">video<\/a> content or other non-text objects on their sites. For example, whether they have sought to optimize their business for local search.<\/p>\n<p>There are ample guidelines and sources to assist you with dataset markup (<a href=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Schema.org homepage<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/Dataset\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Schema.org dataset markup list<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/search\/docs\/data-types\/dataset\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Google\u2019s reference on dataset markup<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/productforums.google.com\/forum\/#!topic\/webmasters\/nPq4BW6iPIA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Google\u2019s webmaster forum<\/a> are all very useful). I would argue that if you are lucky enough to produce original data, it is absolutely worth considering making it crawlable and accessible for <a href=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/2019\/05\/30\/implement-googles-how-to-schema\/\">Google<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>If you are thinking about it, I\u2019d also argue that it is important to start ranking in <a href=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/2019\/07\/11\/seo-lead-site-migration\/\">Google<\/a> Dataset Search now. Traffic to the service might not be massive currently, but the competition to start ranking well is only going to get more difficult. The more webmasters and developers see potential in the service, the more it will be used.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, dataset markup will not only benefit your ranking in Dataset Search it will also increase your visibility for relevant data-centric queries in <a href=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/2020\/01\/02\/quantum-supremacy-and-eight-seo-trends-2020\/\">Google<\/a> too. An important point as we see tables and stats incorporated more frequently and more intuitively in elements of the SERPs such as the Knowledge Graph.<\/p>\n<p>In short:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Getting the most out of your data is straightforward to do.<\/li>\n<li>The sooner you do, the more likely you are to have a head-start on visibility in Dataset Search before your competitors.<\/li>\n<li>And it is good best-practice for visibility in increasingly data-intuitive everyday search.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Google Dataset Search: As a\u00a0ranking signal<\/h2>\n<p>There is a good reason to believe that being indexed in Dataset Search will be a ranking signal in its own right.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/2019\/05\/31\/image-optimization-for-seo\/\">Google<\/a> Scholar, which indexes scholarly literature such as journals and books <a href=\"https:\/\/ai.googleblog.com\/2018\/09\/building-google-dataset-search-and.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">has been noted by Google<\/a> to provide a valuable signal about the importance and prominence of a dataset.<\/p>\n<p>With that in mind, it makes sense to think a dataset that is well-optimized with clear markup and is appearing in Dataset Search would send a strong signal to Google. This would signal that the respective site is a trusted authority as a source of that type of data.<\/p>\n<h2>Thoughts for the future<\/h2>\n<p>It is early days for Google Dataset Search. But for <a href=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/2019\/03\/26\/10-on-page-seo-essentials-crafting-the-perfect-piece-of-content\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SEO<\/a>, the service is already certainly showing its potential.<\/p>\n<p>As a research tool, its usefulness really depends on the community of research houses who are marking up their data for the benefit of the ecosystem. I expect the number of contributors to the service will grow quickly making for a diverse and comprehensive data tool.<\/p>\n<p>I also expect that the SERPs may change considerably. They certainly work better for these kinds of queries than Google\u2019s normal search pages. But I had some bugbears. For example, which URL am I expected to click on if a search result has more than one? Can\u2019t all results have publication dates and the time period the data covers? Could we see images of graphs\/tables in the SERPs?<\/p>\n<p>But when it comes to potential as a place for visibility and a ranking signal, if you are a business that collects data and research (or you are thinking about producing this type of content), now is the time to ensure your datasets are marked up with Schema.org to beat your competitors in ranking on Google Dataset Search.
