The COVID-19 pandemic has been a global tragedy \u2013 one of the most significant events of our lifetime. So how has it affected our behavior? And how can businesses cater to people\u2019s needs? Are there any search trends your business can make good use of?<\/p>\n<p>With more people working from home and lockdowns in many countries stopping people from getting out and about, our habits and priorities have changed significantly.<\/p>\n<p>To gauge what\u2019s happened, we decided to analyze Google search trends data and see which searches had seen an increase in interest over the past few months. We originally analyzed <a href=\"https:\/\/cleardesign.co.uk\/news\/what-are-people-searching-for-lockdown\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">UK COVID-19 searches<\/a>\u00a0but decided to look at the USA for Search Engine Watch.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>The big move online<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>It should be fairly obvious to most of us that the world\u2019s gone online. Zoom, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams \u2013 these are things many of us had barely used before. Now they\u2019re mainstays of our daily life.<\/p>\n<h3>Virtual meetings<\/h3>\n<p>In the world of work, virtual meetings have become the norm. No surprises there. Good to see people doing some research. Say you run a coffee shop &#8211; why not set up virtual coffee mornings for your customers?<\/p>\n<p>If you have a physical store and can&#8217;t sell online for whatever reason, consider creating a free digital product that will attract a relevant audience. If you sell art supplies, why not create some Photoshop brushes and put them out for free?<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Hobbies and pastimes<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Not going out can seriously put a strain on your relationships (see &#8220;get away with murder&#8221; below). But some good old-fashioned family activities can help \u2013 assuming that a Monopoly game doesn\u2019t get too competitive.<\/p>\n<h3>Puzzles<\/h3>\n<p>Puzzles usually see a small peak over Christmas, but March and April this year completely blew that out of the water. That also has a winter peak but hasn\u2019t seen much interest during the pandemic.<\/p>\n<h3>Pub quiz<\/h3>\n<p>I have to admit, I thought this was more of a British thing, but people in the States are loving a good pub quiz. Particularly in Wisconsin. There was a big peak in people searching for &#8220;home workouts&#8221; in March and April, and it\u2019s still a little up against previous months. Have people got the workout advice they needed, or lost motivation? What does the future hold?<\/p>\n<h3>Picnics<\/h3>\n<p>The &#8220;picnics&#8221; graph shows perfectly that habits are still evolving, with searches high in June, July, and into August. People are looking for ways to get outside safely where this is allowed.
