{"id":2374,"date":"2016-02-25T12:08:51","date_gmt":"2016-02-25T12:08:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.searchenginewatch.com\/2016\/02\/25\/say-goodbye-to-google-14-alternative-search-engines\/"},"modified":"2020-02-26T05:49:56","modified_gmt":"2020-02-26T05:49:56","slug":"say-goodbye-to-google-14-alternative-search-engines","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/2016\/02\/25\/say-goodbye-to-google-14-alternative-search-engines\/","title":{"rendered":"Say goodbye to Google: 14 alternative search engines"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Well it\u2019s been a big week for search, I think we can all agree. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>If you\u2019re a regular Google user (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.netmarketshare.com\/search-engine-market-share.aspx?qprid=4&amp;qpcustomd=0\">65% of you globally<\/a>) then you\u2019ll have noticed some changes, both good and bad.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I won\u2019t debate the merits of these\u00a0improvements, we\u2019ve done that already here:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/2016\/02\/23\/google-kills-right-hand-side-ads-what-does-this-mean-for-sem\/\">Google kills Right Hand Side Ads<\/a>\u00a0and here:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/2016\/02\/23\/google-has-launched-accelerated-mobile-pages\/\">Google launches Accelerated Mobile Pages<\/a>, but there&#8217;s a definite feeling of vexation that appears to be coming to a head.<\/p>\n<p>Deep breath&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>As the paid search space increases in \u2018top-heaviness\u2019, as organic results get pushed further off the first SERP, as the Knowledge Graph scrapes more and more publisher content and continues to make it pointless to click through to a website, and as our longstanding feelings of unfairness over Google&#8217;s monopoly and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2016\/jan\/31\/google-tax-deal-not-a-glorious-moment-says-minister\">tax balance<\/a>\u00a0become more acute, now more than ever we feel there should be\u00a0another, viable <a href=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/2018\/05\/21\/no-need-for-google-12-alternative-search-engines-in-2018\/\">search engine<\/a> alternative.<\/p>\n<p>There was a point not that long ago when you could easily divide people between those that used <a href=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/2020\/01\/02\/quantum-supremacy-and-eight-seo-trends-2020\/\">Google<\/a>, Yahoo, Ask Jeeves and AltaVista. Now it\u2019s got to the point where if you\u2019re not using <a href=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/2019\/06\/10\/online-reviews-powerful-seo-weapons\/\">Google<\/a>, you\u2019re not really using the internet properly.<\/p>\n<p>Right now though maybe we should be paying more attention to the alternatives. Maybe our daily lives and, for some of us, careers shouldn&#8217;t\u00a0need to balance on the fickle algorithm changes of the world\u2019s most valuable company.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s see what else is out there in the non-Google world.\u00a0It\u2019s not that scary, I promise. Although you may want to bring a coat.<\/p>\n<p><em>Please note: this is an update of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/sew\/how-to\/2343048\/escape-google-with-these-12-search-engine-alternatives\">an article<\/a> published on SEW in May 2014, we felt like it needed sprucing up especially many of the listed engines (Blekko, Topsy) are no longer with us.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>Bing<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bing.com\/\">Microsoft\u2019s search engine<\/a> is the second most popular <a href=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/optimize-instagram-account-search-engines\">search engine<\/a> in the world, with 15.8% of the search market.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/25\/2016\/02\/Bing-homepage.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-57326\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-57326\" src=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/25\/2016\/02\/Bing-homepage.png\" alt=\"Bing homepage\" width=\"800\" height=\"371\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>But why should you use Bing? <a href=\"http:\/\/lifehacker.com\/the-best-things-bing-does-better-than-google-1483983630\">Lifehacker<\/a> has some great articles where they try to convince themselves as much as anyone else why Bing is a serious contender to Google. Plus points include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Bing\u2019s video search is significantly better than Google\u2019s, giving you a grid of large thumbnails that you can click on to play or preview if you hover over them.<\/li>\n<li>Bing often gives twice as many autocomplete suggestions than Google does.<\/li>\n<li>Bing can predict when airfares are about to go up or down if you\u2019re searching for flights.<\/li>\n<li>Bing also has a feature where if you type <strong>linkfromdomain:[site name]<\/strong> it will highlight the best ranked outgoing links from that site, helping you figure out which other sites your chosen site links to the most.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Also note that Bing powers Yahoo\u2019s search engine.<\/p>\n<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/2018\/05\/21\/no-need-for-google-12-alternative-search-engines-in-2018\/\">DuckDuckGo<\/a><\/h2>\n<p>The key feature of <a href=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/2016\/03\/01\/going-over-to-the-duck-side-a-week-with-duckduckgo\/\">DuckDuckGo<\/a> is that it doesn\u2019t retain its <a href=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/2018\/12\/21\/guide-google-analytics-confusing-terms\/\">users<\/a>&#8216; data, so it won\u2019t track you or manipulate results based on your behaviour. So if you\u2019re particularly spooked by Google\u2019s all-seeing, all-knowing eye, this might be the one for you.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/25\/2016\/02\/DuckDuckGo-homepage.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-57327\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-57327\" src=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/25\/2016\/02\/DuckDuckGo-homepage.png\" alt=\"DuckDuckGo homepage\" width=\"800\" height=\"471\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s lots more info on <a href=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/sew\/study\/2441428\/should-you-be-paying-more-attention-to-duckduckgo\">DuckDuckGo\u2019s performance here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Quora<\/h2>\n<p>As Google gets better and better at answering more complicated questions, it will never be able to match the personal touch available with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.quora.com\/\">Quora<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/25\/2016\/02\/quora.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-57328\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-57328\" src=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/25\/2016\/02\/quora.png\" alt=\"quora\" width=\"800\" height=\"439\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Ask any question and its erudite community will offer their replies. Or you can choose from any similar queries previously asked.<\/p>\n<h2>Dogpile<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dogpile.com\/\">Dogpile<\/a> may look like a search engine you cobbled together with clip-art, but that\u2019s rather the point as it pulls in and \u2018curates\u2019 results from various different engines including Google, Yandex and Yahoo, but removes all the ads.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/25\/2016\/02\/Dogpile-Web-Search.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-57329\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-57329\" src=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/25\/2016\/02\/Dogpile-Web-Search.png\" alt=\"Dogpile Web Search\" width=\"800\" height=\"513\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Vimeo<\/h2>\n<p>Of course if you\u2019re going to give up Google, then you\u2019ll also have to give up YouTube, which can be a terrifying prospect. But there is an alternative. And a pretty good one at that\u2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/\">Vimeo<\/a>. The professional\u2019s choice of video-sharing site, which has lots of HD video and no ads.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/25\/2016\/02\/otis-the-cat-reviews-in-videos-on-Vimeo.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-57330\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-57330\" src=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/25\/2016\/02\/otis-the-cat-reviews-in-videos-on-Vimeo.png\" alt=\"otis the cat reviews in videos on Vimeo\" width=\"800\" height=\"420\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Yandex<\/h2>\n<p>This is a Russian portal, offering many similar products and services as Google, and it\u2019s the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.semrush.com\/blog\/5-advantages-yandex-google-russia\/\">dominant search engine in Russia<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As you can see it offers results in a nice logical format, replete with favicons so you can clearly see the various channels for your branded queries.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/25\/2016\/02\/search-engine-watch-\u2014-Yandex-has-found-11-million-answers.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-57331\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-57331\" src=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/25\/2016\/02\/search-engine-watch-\u2014-Yandex-has-found-11-million-answers.png\" alt=\"search engine watch on Yandex\" width=\"800\" height=\"702\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/2018\/05\/21\/no-need-for-google-12-alternative-search-engines-in-2018\/\">Boardreader<\/a><\/h2>\n<p>If you want to get into the nitty-gritty of a subject with a variety of\u00a0different points of view away from the major publications, <a href=\"http:\/\/boardreader.com\/\">Boardreader<\/a> surfaces results purely from forums, message boards and, of course, Reddit.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/25\/2016\/02\/Boardreader-Forum-Search-Engine-1.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-57333\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-57333\" src=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/25\/2016\/02\/Boardreader-Forum-Search-Engine-1.png\" alt=\"Boardreader Forum Search Engine\" width=\"800\" height=\"424\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>WolframAlpha<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wolframalpha.com\/\">WolframAlpha<\/a> is a \u2018computational knowledge engine\u2019, or super clever nerd to you and me. Ask it to calculate any data or ask it about any fact and it will give you the answer. Plus it does this awesome \u2018computing\u2019 thing while it thinks about your answer (which can take a short while.)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/25\/2016\/02\/what-really-killed-the-dinosaurs-Wolfram-Alpha.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-57334\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-57334\" src=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/25\/2016\/02\/what-really-killed-the-dinosaurs-Wolfram-Alpha.png\" alt=\"what really killed the dinosaurs Wolfram Alpha\" width=\"800\" height=\"587\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not always successful, you have to practice how to get the best from it. But at least it\u2019s aware of the terrible 90s television show The Dinosaurs.<\/p>\n<h2>StartPage<\/h2>\n<p>Another search engine that puts privacy at the forefront, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.startpage.com\/\">StartPage<\/a> (originally Ixquick) was the first search engine to allow its users to search privately.<\/p>\n<p>With StartPage,\u00a0none of your details are stored (including your IP address) and no cookies are used, save for a single, anonymous cookie that&#8217;s used to remember your preferences. (For those who want to go &#8220;cookie-free&#8221;, StartPage has a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.startpage.com\/eng\/urlgenerator-details.html#hmb\">URL generator<\/a>\u00a0alternative\u00a0to save your settings).<\/p>\n<p>Uniquely, StartPage also offers a proxy for those who want to not just search, but browse, the web in full privacy.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/25\/2016\/02\/StartPage-homepage.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-70557 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/25\/2016\/02\/StartPage-homepage.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"463\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Ask.com<\/h2>\n<p>Oh look\u2026 <a href=\"http:\/\/uk.ask.com\/?o=10181&amp;l=dir&amp;ad=dirN\">Ask Jeeves<\/a> is still around. Also he\u2019s no longer a Wodehousian butler, but a computer generated bank manager. Weird.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/25\/2016\/02\/Ask-Jeeves-What-s-Your-Question-.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-57336\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-57336\" src=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/25\/2016\/02\/Ask-Jeeves-What-s-Your-Question-.png\" alt=\"Ask Jeeves\" width=\"800\" height=\"362\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s still a slightly mediocre search engine pretending to be a question and answer site, but the \u2018Popular Q&amp;A\u2019 results found on the right hand side are very handy if Jeeves himself can\u2019t satisfy your query.
