With more than 9% of web users searching on other engines, it\u2019s important that we occasionally take the time to check out what they are using and what those platforms are up to.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Read on for my hotlist of 12 alternatives to \u2018The Big G\u2019. As you\u2019ll see, there\u2019s been some changes in the alternative search world since my colleague <a href=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/2016\/02\/25\/say-goodbye-to-google-14-alternative-search-engines\/\">Christopher Ratcliff wrote his comprehensive listicle back in early 2014<\/a>. Since then, some have dropped off the map and others have been usurped in usefulness by <a href=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/2019\/07\/11\/seo-lead-site-migration\/\">Google\u2019s<\/a> increasingly rich functionality, and are not featured here.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bing.com\"><strong>Bing<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Globally, Bing is still the second biggest<a href=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/2018\/05\/21\/no-need-for-google-12-alternative-search-engines-in-2018\/\"> search engine <\/a>after <a href=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/2018\/05\/21\/no-need-for-google-12-alternative-search-engines-in-2018\/\">Google<\/a> and it also still powers the third biggest, Yahoo!.<\/p>\n<p>With its clean white background, blue links, and green URLs, it sure looks familiar although it also features a few things that sets it apart. For example its \u2018Rewards\u2019 scheme gives you points when you shop or search via the service that can then be used to go towards buying things like apps and movies.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/25\/2018\/05\/alternatives1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-79205\" src=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/25\/2018\/05\/alternatives1-1024x427.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"427\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Bing also has a \u2018My Saves\u2019 function acting as a bookmark tool. It also boasts some prominent \u2013 and handy \u2013 filters for results by date, language, and region.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baidu.com\"><strong>Baidu<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>If you have an interest in digital in Asia, you need to know about Baidu.<\/p>\n<p>Baidu is the <a href=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/2018\/05\/21\/no-need-for-google-12-alternative-search-engines-in-2018\/\">search engine<\/a> of choice for around 77% of China\u2019s internet market. Though its dominance can be seen to fluctuate \u2013 thanks to fierce competition from other domestic rivals such as Shenma and Haosou.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/25\/2018\/05\/alternatives2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-79206\" src=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/25\/2018\/05\/alternatives2-1024x378.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"378\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Like Bing, you have to look closely at Baidu to see many differences between it and <a href=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/2019\/04\/25\/whats-it-like-using-duckduckgo-in-2019\/\">Google<\/a> (other than it being in Mandarin). It is similar aesthetically, has a reliance on ads, and is also making moves to incorporate more rich features in the SERPs.<\/p>\n<p>On the flipside though, the service is noted for its censorship of certain images and blocking of pro-democracy websites \u2013 to the extent that might seem quite extreme to searchers who are used to <a href=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/2019\/05\/20\/seven-reasons-why-your-rankings-dropped-and-how-to-fix-them\/\">Google<\/a>.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/yandex.com\/\"><strong>Yandex<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Yandex is to Russia as Baidu is to China. More than 53% of Russian <a href=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/optimize-instagram-account-search-engines\">search engine<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/2018\/12\/21\/guide-google-analytics-confusing-terms\/\">users<\/a> favour Yandex. It also has a presence in Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Turkey, and Belarus.<\/p>\n<p>The search engine is available in English and Cyrillic and incorporates social logins. And if users choose to use Yandex Disk \u2013 its cloud storage service \u2013 it is easy to search your files right from the search bar.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/25\/2018\/05\/alternatives3.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-79208\" src=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/25\/2018\/05\/alternatives3-1024x121.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"121\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecosia.org\"><strong>Ecosia<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>As more of our computing moves into the cloud, users are becoming increasingly aware of the environmental impact of day to day digital activities.<\/p>\n<p>Googling is \u2013 perhaps surprisingly for such a quick innocuous activity \u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.janavirgin.com\/CO2\/\">a formidable Co2 producer<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Launched in 2009, <a href=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/2018\/05\/21\/no-need-for-google-12-alternative-search-engines-in-2018\/\">Ecosia<\/a> is a Co2-neutral alternative. With every search made, the social business uses the revenue generated to go towards its tree-planting scheme. On average, 45 searches are needed to make a single tree.<\/p>\n<p>Much of the engine itself is powered by Bing.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/25\/2018\/05\/alternatives4.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-79211\" src=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/25\/2018\/05\/alternatives4-1024x474.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"474\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ol start=\"5\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/duckduckgo.com\"><strong>DuckDuckGo<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>We have <a href=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/2016\/03\/01\/going-over-to-the-duck-side-a-week-with-duckduckgo\/\">covered DuckDuckGo extensively in the past<\/a> and the engine is still going strong.<\/p>\n<p>Its USP is simple: it doesn\u2019t collect, store, or pass on any personal information about its users. It\u2019s a logical choice if you want a search experience which is free from ad targeting and if potential data storage about your search activities makes you feel uneasy.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/25\/2018\/05\/alternatives5.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-79212\" src=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/25\/2018\/05\/alternatives5-1024x448.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"448\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>While the service doesn\u2019t target users with ads or suggestions based on search history, it is not free from ads altogether. The ads it does deliver are syndicated via Bing.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"6\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.startpage.com\"><strong>StartPage<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Like <a href=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/2018\/05\/21\/no-need-for-google-12-alternative-search-engines-in-2018\/\">DuckDuckGo<\/a>, StartPage was founded with strict user Privacy as its USP. Again, it doesn\u2019t track and store your data, and it doesn\u2019t target ads based on your behaviors.<\/p>\n<p>The engine is powered by <a href=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/2019\/06\/17\/local-seo-guide\/\">Google<\/a> and does use ads (delivered by <a href=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/2019\/05\/30\/implement-googles-how-to-schema\/\">Google<\/a>) to generate revenue. Each search result is also delivered with a \u2018Proxy\u2019 option which allows users to browse the following site anonymously.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/25\/2018\/05\/alternatives6.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-79213\" src=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/25\/2018\/05\/alternatives6-1024x440.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"440\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ol start=\"7\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/\"><strong>Twitter<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>I\u2019ve included Twitter because I think its search functionality can be useful in certain situations.<\/p>\n<p>For instance, during a breaking news event, tweets from people in the vicinity are likely to be the quickest up-to-the-second updates of what\u2019s going on before initial news sites and <a href=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/2019\/07\/12\/how-to-get-featured-snippets-no-link-building\/\">Google\u2019s<\/a> algorithms catch up.<\/p>\n<p>You can see this \u2018First For News\u2019 authority being something the service is increasingly exploring. Any search on Twitter will lead to a filtered \u2018News\u2019 tab initially, but users can easily click over to the \u2018Latest\u2019 tab to see updates come in from anyone using that search term second by second.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/25\/2018\/05\/alternatives7.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-79214\" src=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/25\/2018\/05\/alternatives7-1024x560.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"560\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ol start=\"8\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/search.creativecommons.org\/\"><strong>CC Search<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>CC Search is a great tool for finding copyright-free content.<\/p>\n<p>Whether you want an image to use on a blog post, a piece of music to add to a video, or you just want a piece of media to remix \u2013 it is a really h engine.<\/p>\n<p>The site works by drawing in search results from existing platforms \u2013 such as Flickr, or Soundcloud \u2013 which have been tagged as Creative Commons material.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/25\/2018\/05\/alternatives8.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-79215\" src=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/25\/2018\/05\/alternatives8-1024x388.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"388\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ol start=\"9\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/\"><strong>Internet Archive<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Continuing in the spirit of accessible content, Internet Archive (often known by its URL, archive.org) is a vast collection of documented material \u2013 including music, books, video, educational texts, and more.<\/p>\n<p>It is also home to the endlessly fascinating Wayback Machine, a tool which has been taking snapshots of the internet since the 90s.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/25\/2018\/05\/alternatives9.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-79216\" src=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/25\/2018\/05\/alternatives9-1024x401.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"401\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ol start=\"10\">\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/wiki.com\"><strong>Wiki.com<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>You are probably all familiar with Wikipedia but there are thousands of other wikis which are an amazing resource on a range of topics \u2013 from politics to pop culture.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/2018\/05\/21\/no-need-for-google-12-alternative-search-engines-in-2018\/\">Wiki.com<\/a> is a handy search engine which draws in content from wikis only if you want community-led encyclopedic know-how about something (aside from Wikipedia).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/25\/2018\/05\/alternatives10.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-79219\" src=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/25\/2018\/05\/alternatives10.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"586\" height=\"233\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ol start=\"11\">\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/boardreader.com\"><strong>Boardreader<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/2018\/05\/21\/no-need-for-google-12-alternative-search-engines-in-2018\/\">Boardreader<\/a> is a search engine which pulls in results from forums and message boards.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a convenient tool if you\u2019re searching for content written by everyday users about a topic, but you aren\u2019t necessarily familiar enough with the niche to know the best forum or board to visit from the outset.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/25\/2018\/05\/alternatives11-1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-79222\" src=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/25\/2018\/05\/alternatives11-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"424\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ol start=\"12\">\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.slideshare.net\">Slideshare<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Slideshare, now hosted by <a href=\"https:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/2019\/10\/03\/linkedin-retargeting-strategies\/\">LinkedIn<\/a>, is a great tool for searching documented slideshow presentations, as well as PDFs and eBooks.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re tasked with needing to do a presentation yourself, or you need information about a topic that is likely to have seen a presentation made for it in the past, Slideshare is a valuable repository.
